Objectives
The Cinema pathway is organised to respond to four key objectives: linking theory and practice; encouraging an approach to cinema studies that is open to other artistic domains and artistic mediums; providing an awareness of global professional cinema and audiovisual networks; guiding each student in his or her personal learning plan and employment objectives.
This undergraduate Licence is distinctly human in scale, as there is a limited number of places available (80 students in the first year of study). The programme comprises both lectures and seminars, ensuring the transmission and acquisition of a dual knowledge base that is both scientific and professional in nature. In the first instance, this programme of study thus requires good writing, critical reading and organisation skills on the part of the student.
Many of the teachers on the Cinema programme are professionals who guarantee, from the second semester of the second year onwards, the transmission of their professional experience to students (for example as scriptwriters, film editors, camera personnel, producers, directors, specialists in audiovisual law, etc.). Students thus carry out a real range of practical projects throughout the programme (in screenplay, editing, and directing). This second element of the programme necessitates a great level of motivation, a spirit of initiative and teamwork, and a degree of adaptability and creativity on the part of the students.
Furthermore, for those students wishing to study abroad there is the possibility of undertaking one or two semesters within a foreign university (with opportunities particularly in Canada, Germany, Spain or even Italy) as part of the third year of study.
Training content
Three years of study
First year of undergraduate study (Licence 1)
A solid knowledge base of the history of cinema is provided during the course of the first two years, from the earliest days of cinema, to postmodernist film as we currently know it. For each period that is studied, lectures are accompanied by seminars, working towards the practice of film analysis.
Cinema cannot be considered in a vacuum, but rather must be seen as occupying a place within a much wider cultural and artistic setting, where discussions and exchanges are numerous. As such, over the course of the first three semesters, different course units interrogate the aesthetic values of other art forms, as well as the history and analysis of still images and indeed of live performance.
In line with this, students are invited to explore the cultural and artistic expressions emanating from areas of the globe from which they are, geographically speaking, far-removed and which seem generally less familiar.
Second year of undergraduate study (Licence 2)
From the fourth semester of this undergraduate Licence onwards, the syllabus includes a certain number of practical course units, so that each student comes into contact with the different stages of film production, from the writing of the screenplay to the post-production phase, including filming and editing. Units in production, film law, and economics complete this phase of the programme of study.
Third year of study (Licence 3)
Whilst continuing to explore the areas of study undertaken over the course of the preceding semesters, an important part of the third year is the more specific approach, based around different film theories and the multiple possible approaches to audiovisual media as an object of study (including narratological, sociocultural, and writer/director-driven approaches).
From the first year (Licence 1) onwards, this programme also offers students the opportunity to acquire skills in information technology, and to learn a foreign language. Furthermore, a day of meet-ups with practicing professionals is organised each year, providing students with the opportunity to discover the different professions within this sector.

• Mobiliser une culture générale artistique et les principales méthodes pour étudier les arts du spectacle.
• Identifier les principales pratiques passées et contemporaines : évolution des formes et des genres, architecture des lieux de spectacle, décors, mise en scène, répertoire, interprètes, publics et critiques.
• Mobiliser une réflexion théorique et critique portant sur les arts du spectacle (littérature, esthétique, philosophie de l’art, histoire de l’art, sociologie de l’art, anthropologie, psychanalyse...) pour définir des problématiques d’étude des créations.

Career pathways
Employment opportunities following specialisation include:
- professions related to directing (camera angle, editing), writing screenplays, film production, and film criticism;
- professions related to screening and programming (in cinemas, at festivals, etc.), and animations;
- professions related to cultural co-ordination and specialised documentation in cinema and audiovisual media;
- professions related to public relations, production, administration and communication within cultural structures;
- professions related to teaching and research in cinema and audiovisual media.
Further studies
Having completed the undergraduate Licence in Cinema, the next possible step is to undertake a Master’s within the same speciality. At Université Bordeaux Montaigne, study at Master’s level within this discipline offers the choice between a research-based subject pathway, linked most particularly to ‘Historical and Sociocultural Approaches to Cinema and Television’, and a vocational pathway, specifically dedicated to the ‘Production of Documentaries and the Promotion of Archives’.
The undergraduate Licence also allows students to enter competitive examinations such as the French State Film School (FEMIS) competition. Successful candidates can continue their studies within a prestigious higher education establishment.
