Presentation of DELF and DALF diplomas

The DELF and the DALF are the official diplomas issued by the French Ministry of National Education, to certify the skills in French of foreign applicants and French people from a non-French speaking country that do not hold a French secondary school or university diploma.

The DELF is the « Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française » (French language studies diploma).

It includes 4 diplomas corresponding to the first 4 levels described by the CEFR: DELF A1, DELF A2, DELF B1 and DELF B2.

The DALF is the « Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française » (in-depth French language diploma).

It includes 2 independent diplomas, corresponding to the last two levels of the CEFR: DALF C1 and DALF C2.

DELF and DALF certifications are placed under the authority of France Éducation International (formerly CIEP).

What you should know about the DELF and the DALF:

-The DELF Tout public is intended for adults and older teenagers, foreigners or French people (from a non-French-speaking country that does not hold a French secondary school or university diploma), who do not speak French as their mother tongue, and who wish to enhance their skills in this language for personal or professional purposes.

- It is an official, high-quality diploma, harmonized with the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for languages.

- This diploma is recognized worldwide and is valid for life.

- The 6 diplomas that make up the DELF and the DALF are completely independent. So, if you want to take DELF A2, you don't need to take DELF A1 first.

- At each level the 4 skills are assessed: oral comprehension and oral production, written comprehension and written production.

Each skill is scored on 25 points. You must obtain a score higher than or equal to 50 points (out of 100) to obtain your diploma.

What are DELF and DALF diplomas used for?

- Depending on the level passed, the DELF can enhance a curriculum vitae (CV), and makes it easier to get a job in a company where the spoken language is French.

-The DELF A2 allows you to obtain the French resident card (since March 7th, 2018, level A2 is required for the renewal of the 10-year residence permit).

-The DELF B1 allows you to obtain French nationality.

-The DELF B2, and even sometimes DALF C1, allow entry to French, European or French-speaking universities, and to certain Grandes Écoles.
