Description
The Master’s programme in English Studies includes theory-based, methodology-based and applied course units. It is based on research activity and an introduction to the professional context in equal measures. The Master’s programme is geared towards research-oriented professions and draws on the scientific output of the team of teaching staff and university lecturer-researchers who contribute to the programme.
Objectives
The Master’s in English Studies offers a thorough programme of study in all fields of research encompassed by ‘English Studies’, including literature, civilisation, language, linguistics and cinema. Students are able to gain an introduction to the professional context throughout or after their studies. There is also the opportunity for ‘tasters’ of other connected disciplines, thanks to the overlap of some course units with those from within other Master’s programmes. These include programmes in Cultural Studies, Translation, Information and Communication Sciences, Gender Studies, Master’s for Future Teachers (Master MEEF) and Linguistic Sciences. The Master’s in English Studies also includes a detailed study of research methodologies, enabling students to continue towards further study at doctoral level if they wish to.
Training content
Two years of study: Master 1 (M1) and Master 2 (M2)
Throughout the two years of study, students develop a more detailed understanding of the methodologies that underpin the discipline of English Studies. In seminar units, students learn to respond critically and to present their own research findings. They will contribute to the continuation of research work via activities organised by research teams associated with this Master’s programme. The Bordeaux Montaigne University research laboratory for anglophone cultures and literatures (CLIMAS) is the main contributor. At the same time, students must see through their own individual research projects, which take the form of a dissertation.
- Master 1: In the first year of this two-year Master’s programme, course units develop research, documentation and archiving skills and offer an introduction to the professional context.
- Master 2: In the second year of this two-year Master’s programme, course units focus on developing research skills and preparing students for the dissertation write-up.
- The research-based dissertation is completed across two years. In Master 1, students choose their subject and their dissertation supervisor. In Master 2, students write their dissertation and defend the dissertation in an oral examination.
Universal adjustment
Distance Learning (DL)
In Master 1 and Master 2, several of the seminar units can be followed via Distance Learning. A specific teaching programme is available on the online study platform. These seminar units are open to all students but are particularly designed in respect of the needs of exchange students and students of the Master’s for Future Teachers (Master MEEF).
